71% of Spaniards plan to take at least one trip during the upcoming Christmas season, despite rising prices and the economic situation, according to a study by flight search engine Jetcost. The average expected expenditure for these trips is €803 per person. The analysis reveals that most of those surveyed have already made their reservations for travel in December or January. Seven per cent of Spaniards are waiting until the last minute to decide, while 22 per cent say they will not be travelling at all. Jetcost points out that booking in advance could mean savings of up to 25 per cent on prices. In terms of trip duration, 43% of respondents plan to travel for a maximum of three days. This is followed by 27% who will travel for between three and five days, 13% who will travel for a week, and 9% who will travel for between 8 and 15 days. Private cars are the preferred method of transport, chosen by 56% of respondents, followed by aeroplanes (24%), trains (10%), buses (7%) and boats (3%). In terms of company, almost half of Spaniards (48%) choose family as their main travel option, ahead of travelling as a couple (27%), with friends (16%) or alone (9%). Domestic destinations continue to be the favourite for 64% of Spaniards. Twenty-seven per cent will choose an international destination and 9% of those surveyed will combine both. In Spain, Madrid is the most sought-after destination, followed by Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Barcelona and Seville, according to data recorded by Jetcost. Internationally, Europe attracts the most interest, with Paris at the top of the search list, followed by Rome, Prague, London and Brussels. For long-haul travel, the destinations that are popular this year among Spaniards in December are New York, Istanbul, Havana, Marrakech and Buenos Aires. Spanish visitors are drawn to London for a blend of cultural enrichment, shopping, a vibrant urban atmosphere, and a change of pace from their own sunny climate. The ease of travel and familiarity with British culture also contribute to its popularity. Cultural and historical appeal Vibrant and contemporary culture: Spain and the UK share a rich cultural history, but Spanish travelers also appreciate London’s modern culture. Many are drawn to the vibrant city life, including its extensive street art scene. World-class institutions: London is home to some of the world’s most famous museums and galleries, such as the British Museum and the National Gallery. Many of these offer free admission, making high culture accessible to everyone. Iconic landmarks: Classic British “pomp and circumstance” holds an appeal for many Spaniards, who enjoy visiting historic palaces, castles, and other monuments. Diverse atmosphere: London’s rich multicultural environment, with people from all over the world, is seen as a welcoming and dynamic place to visit. Urban experience and climate contrast Change of pace: Many Spanish tourists, especially those from warmer climates, enjoy experiencing London’s cooler and less sunny weather. For those looking to escape the heat, London provides a pleasant alternative. Urban exploration: The sheer variety of things to do in a single city is a major draw. Spanish tourists appreciate being able to travel easily by open-top bus to see the sights, visit famous restaurants, and generally explore a bustling world city. Practical and economic factors Easy travel access: Spain has excellent and frequent air links with the UK, with 97% of Spanish visitors arriving by plane in 2024. London airports are the primary entry points. Established travel routes: The ease of booking and familiarity of the destination make London a straightforward and convenient choice for a short break. Record spending: Spanish visitors to the UK are known to spend a significant amount of money. In 2024, they spent a record £1.4 billion, reflecting a strong willingness to invest in their UK holiday experiences.
