‘Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra’ Not Releasing on OTT Anytime Soon: Dulquer Salmaan Clarifies

The Malayalam fantasy film, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen, has become the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever, yet it won’t be hitting streaming platforms just yet.

Box Office Triumph

Released on August 28, Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra has grossed over ₹271 crore worldwide in less than a month, surpassing all previous Malayalam cinema records. The film’s extraordinary theatrical run is one of the reasons the makers are in no rush to release it online.

Dulquer Busts OTT Rumours

Amid growing chatter that the film would premiere on Netflix by the end of September, Dulquer took to X (formerly Twitter) to issue a clarification:

“Lokah isn’t coming to OTT anytime soon. Ignore the fake news and stay tuned for official announcements! #Lokah #WhatstheHurry.”

Wayfarer Films, Dulquer’s production house, also reposted the statement and released an updated list of theatres still screening the film in Kerala, signalling their focus on extending its theatrical run.

Comparison With Other Films

Many South Indian films release on OTT within four to five weeks of their theatrical debut. For instance, Mohanlal’s Hridayapoorvam, which also hit cinemas on August 28, is scheduled to stream on JioHotstar from September 26. However, Dulquer and team are prioritizing box-office performance over a quick digital release.

Fans welcomed the move to delay the OTT premiere, with many saying that successful theatrical films should not rush to streaming. Some even called for a minimum 12-week window before OTT releases to protect the theatre business.
