Logitech K980 Signature Slim Solar+ Keyboard: $99 Light-Powered Wireless With 4-Month Battery
Logitech has expanded its wireless keyboard lineup with the Signature Slim Solar+ K980, a solar-powered model priced at $99. While solar keyboards are not new to Logitech—the company has been making them for over a decade—the K980 introduces a more versatile charging solution that addresses common concerns about sunlight availability and battery life.
Light-Powered Charging
The standout feature of the K980 is its Logi LightCharge technology, which integrates a solar strip and a rechargeable battery. Unlike earlier models that relied mainly on sunlight, the K980 can harvest energy from virtually any light source, provided the brightness is at least 200 lux. This means the keyboard can recharge from both natural and artificial indoor lighting, making it far more practical in office or home environments with limited sunlight exposure.
Once fully charged, Logitech states that the K980 can operate for up to four months in total darkness. While it is unclear whether this refers to continuous active use or stored battery retention, the claim highlights the efficiency of the charging system.
Battery and Sustainability
The rechargeable battery is designed with longevity in mind. Logitech estimates a 10-year lifespan, and unlike sealed batteries in many consumer electronics, this one is user-replaceable. The battery is encased in a plastic housing, and replacement parts are available through iFixit, supporting repairability and extending the keyboard’s usable life.
Design and Functionality
Beyond its solar capability, the K980 is a full-sized slim keyboard measuring 5.63 x 16.96 x 0.8 inches and weighing about 24 ounces. It features scissor-switch keys for a quieter typing experience, making it suitable for office use. The keyboard supports multi-device connectivity through Bluetooth, allowing pairing with up to three devices simultaneously. Switching between them is simplified by Logitech’s Easy-Switch keys.
Users can further customize functions through the Logi Options+ app, which enables programming of the action key and assigning an AI launch key to open specific AI tools.
The K980 lacks backlighting and indicator lights, including Caps Lock and battery indicators. This omission is intentional, helping conserve energy and maximize solar efficiency. The device also has no charging ports, as all power comes from its solar system.
Availability and Variants
The K980 is available in black or white for $99. A business-focused edition, priced at $109, includes a USB-C receiver for additional connectivity. Logitech also offers a Mac-specific version for the same $99 price, though this is limited to the North American market.
