On Monday, October 27, the pupils at CEIP Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria in Rincon de la Victoria got more than just a school day. They got a crash course in healthy eating and lifestyle. The session is part of Sabor a Malaga’s campaign against childhood obesity, which launched back in May and has been rolling through schools across the province ever since. The initiative aims to teach kids from a young age why fresh, local produce matters, why exercise should be fun, and how small choices today can have a big impact on their health tomorrow. Local officials joined in too: Francisco Salado, mayor of Rincon and president of the provincial council, stressed that over 35 per cent of Malaga’s children are overweight or obese. “We need to tackle this early,” he said, encouraging kids to eat local fruit and vegetables and get moving. Learning by doing The campaign isn’t just talk. Experts like Antonio Zoido, a nutritionist, explained the benefits of a balanced diet and gave practical tips about fruits, vegetables, and portion sizes. Meanwhile, José Antonio Ramírez, a cardioprevention specialist, ran a hands-on game showing kids how to spot early warning signs of heart trouble, whether at school, at home, or on the playground. The day ended on a sweet note. Well, fruity actually. Frutas y Verduras Acosta, a local produce company linked to Sabor a Malaga, gave out free fresh fruit to the children, encouraging them to share and experiment with fun recipes. A province-wide push From Rincon de la Victoria to Malaga, Cartama, Mijas, Casarabonela, and Canillas de Aceituno, roughly 600 kids aged 7 to 11 are taking part in this educational tour. Teachers, parents, and associations are also involved, making it a community-wide push for healthier futures. Sabor a Malaga and the provincial council say these workshops aren’t just a one-off. They aim to continue beyond December and even plan to expand in 2016, embedding lessons about nutrition, exercise, and well-being across more schools. Read here more news from Axarquia.
