Liverpool 'harshly treated' as Virgil van Dijk's goal controversially ruled out by VAR

Virgil van Dijk was left furious on Sunday afternoon after he saw his header chalked off by VAR . Arne Slot's side had been poor for the opening 40 minutes, and were behind, but were offered a lifeline when Van Dijk's header sailed past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Manchester City net. However, the Dutchman's celebrations were cut short as VAR intervened . VAR deemed Andy Robertson was in the way of the big Italian - impeding his eyeline. Explaining the decision on the Premier League's Match Centre account, a post read: "The referee’s call of offside and no goal to Liverpool was checked and confirmed by VAR. "With Robertson in an offside position and deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper." Speaking on Sky Sports' coverage, Gary Neville was seething at the decision - admitting Liverpool were "harshly treated". He added: "Robertson is to the left of the goalkeeper. I am not sure...I am not convinced he is getting there. "I think he is outside the eyeline of the goalkeeper. I think Slot is right to be fuming. The goalkeeper is not getting anywhere near that. He had a clear line of sight." Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Dion Dublin added: "I don't think he was in the goalkeeper's eyeline. I have seen it two or three times and if anyone could be in his eyeline it would be Jeremy Doku. "Robertson is in an offiside position but he is not in his eyeline. Liverpool were left livid at the decision, and their frustrations would only get worse as some shocking defending from Van Dijk saw Nico Gonzalez double City's lead. "Sometimes you can tell a team is there to be beaten," Neville said. Liverpool's legs are gone. They cannot get out. It is so, so poor. Van Dijk just lets it hit him. Really strange."
