New Delhi: Although the global Jewish population is around 15 million no one surpasses Jews in global influence. The Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post has released a list of the worlds 50 most powerful Jewish people. This list includes figures who play a significant role in global politics business and society. However there are also some whose views on India have been controversial. However most of the people on the list have done significant work to strengthen India-Israel relations.
Howard Lutnick and Steve Witkoff
American businessman Howard Lutnick who is the US Secretary of Commerce is ranked sixth on the list while Steve Witkoff is ranked second. Both of them are in the top 10 of the list of most influential Jews and they are currently causing considerable concern for India. Howard Lutnick has spewed venom against India since the Trump administration came to power while Steve Witkoff is the man whose son has been used by Pakistan to woo Donald Trump.
Pro and anti-India Jewish leaders
Lutnick has prioritised relations with Pakistan and has made statements against India while Witkoff Donald Trumps Middle East envoy has also made several statements against India particularly on the Kashmir issue. Lutnick accused India of imposing high tariffs on US agricultural products and importing oil from Russia which has strained trade relations between the two countries. His criticisms have impacted US relations with India.
However this list also includes several Jewish leaders who have developed strong ties with India. For example Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who is ranked first on this list is the Israeli Prime Minister. Netanyahu has consistently advocated for strong bilateral relations with India. Under his leadership defence trade and cultural cooperation between Israel and India have expanded significantly.
Billionaire businessmen like Jan Koum Michael Dell and Bill Ackman have also fostered business ties with India. Shalva Weil a renowned Jewish scholar has authored numerous research papers on the history and culture of the Jewish community in India. He has organised numerous events to promote cultural ties between India and Israel. He believes that increasing cultural understanding between the two countries will strengthen their ties.
