With a high unemployment rate in the country, an unemployed Bachelor of Commerce in Logistics graduate has ventured into pig farming.
The 29-year-old Zwivhuya Mudau from Ha-Ramantsha, outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, started her business after borrowing funds from her pizza family business.
She sells the pork to residents and small businesses.
Mudau says she decided to challenge herself and give it a shot despite challenges.
“Well, regarding how everything is going within the country, the economy. I realised that if I just sit down and wait for me to get a job, I wouldn’t get anywhere in life. So, then I decided with the funds that I have, let me start something for myself. It was a very tricky one because I knew that it was a field dominated by males, so I decided to give it a shot.”
29-year-old Zwivhuya Mudau started with crop farming after several years of being unemployed. Her new business venture, Vhadau Premium Piggery, is her hope for financial freedom.
She says the challenges she faced while being unemployed laid a strong foundation for her journey into farming.
“I started with crop farming, and I realized that crop farming is not working for me. That is when I fell in love more with pig farming because I was doing both of them at the same time. That is when I left crop farming because I was doing spinach, cabbage, and all of those things. That is when I fell in love with pig farming. I have achieved a lot financially; it took me from point zero to point two.”
Her business also provides piggery training to empower women and aspiring farmers in the community. She is encouraging the youth to start their own businesses in various sectors.
“You need to start somewhere because you cannot sit and think that someone is going to save in this economy, so start small with what you have, and the rest will follow.”
