Malawi collaboration with the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) has yielded breakthroughs in developing life saving medicines and vaccine in Africa. This is according to EDCTP head of Africa office Thomas Nyirenda. Nyirenda says the partnership has enhanced Africa’s capacity to combat infectious diseases and improve global health outcomes. “Malawi has been a major beneficiary, receiving €6.6 million in funding between 2004 and 2014, and €11 million between 2014 and 2024. The funding has supported research institutions like the Kamuzu University of Health and Allied Sciences (KUHeS) and the Ministry of Health. Malawian researchers have contributed to developing several key health innovations,” highlighted Nyirenda.Established in 2003, EDCTP aims to accelerate clinical research and foster collaboration between Africa and Europe in tackling diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. The initiative has funded over 500 clinical studies across Africa, supported over 3,000 African researchers and provided training for health professionals.Meanwhile, Nyirenda has highlighted that the EDCTP’s current program, Global Health EDCTP3, has a budget of €1.8 billion, focusing on emerging challenges like antimicrobial resistance and climate-driven health threats, adding that Malawi will also benefit.
