‘Lifting the Limits for PKU’ benefit event held in Rancho Santa Fe

“Lifting the Limits for PKU” raised $350,000 at an event held Sept. 5 at the Secret Garden in Rancho Santa Fe. The event raises funds to support NPKUA (National PKU Alliance) whose mission “is to improve the lives of individuals with PKU, pursue a cure by expanding research and provide education and support to individuals living with PKU and their caregivers,” according to their website at www.npkua.org.

PKU stands for phenylketonuria, a rare metabolic disease that’s inherited when a baby gets two genetic variants for PKU, one from each parent, the website stated, which also says “Toxic levels of Phe in the first few years of life can cause irreversible damage including neurological impacts and complications such as IQ loss, memory loss, seizures, learning disabilities, and emotional issues.”

The event featured emcee Scott Pelley, award-winning journalist and 60 minutes correspondent, cocktails, hors d’ oeuvres, silent and live auction, dinner and entertainment. For more information, visit tinyurl.com/PKUg
