Lewis Hamilton loses his 18-year-old record to Kimi Antonelli as the Mercedes driver picks up major achievement

Following the conclusion of the 2025 Brazil GP, Lewis Hamilton lost his 18-year-old record to Kimi Antonelli after the Mercedes driver picked up a podium. Thanks to the podium, Antonelli picked up 18 points and reached 122 points in his debut season, and in doing so, he broke Hamilton's long-standing record for the most points by a rookie driver.Back in 2007, Hamilton debuted for McLaren. That year, he picked up a total of 109 points. But Antonelli's P2 in Sao Paulo put him at the pole position of this record with 122 points.Interestingly, Antonelli made his debut this season and replaced Hamilton, who moved to Ferrari at the end of last season. The Italian driver was able to pull off this feat in 21 races and five sprints.Even though Kimi Antonelli is currently the holder of maximum points by a rookie driver in his debut season, the point system is entirely different now than it was in 2007. That season, the maximum points that were available were 10, whereas it is 25 now, which is two and a half times more.Additionally, F1 had 17 races that season and no sprints. Whereas they have 24 in 2025. If Lewis Hamilton's points are calculated by two and a half times, the seven-time world champion would have reached around 272 points in 17 races. If 21 races and five sprints are taken into consideration, Hamilton would have reached nearly 350 points in his rookie season. However, all these calculations are based on assumptions.Kimi Antonelli let his feelings known after a stellar weekend in BrazilKimi Antonelli shared his thoughts after he experienced a stellar race weekend in Brazil. Speaking to the media after the race, here's what the Mercedes star said:Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes competes during the F1 Grand Prix of Sao Paulo at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Sao Paulo, Brazil on November 9, 2025 - Source: Getty"Overall, this weekend, we have done a great job as a team. We weren't the quickest car here, so I think we've absolutely maximised each session and result with P2 in both qualifying sessions, the Sprint, and today's race.""There are still a lot of things I am learning and improving on, but this gives me good confidence going into the final three races of the season. Our battle is for P2 in the Constructors' Championship, and I am glad we could add a good haul of points here in Brazil," he further added. (Via Sky Sports F1)After 21 races and five sprints, Kimi Antonelli is in P7 of the Drivers' Championship with 122 points. His teammate, George Russell, is in P4 with 276 points. Mercedes have improved significantly this weekend in the Constructors' Championship, thanks to P2 and P4 on Sunday, and are currently in P2 with 398 points.
