Lewis Capaldi makes 'amazing' donation to tearful fan with rare disease after meeting her at London gig

Lewis Capaldi made a generous donation to a fan with a rare health condition after meeting her outside his gig in London.

The Survive singer, 28, spotted Madeleine Thurgood and her mother Carina before his concert at the 02 Arena last week and introduced himself to them.

Carina explained that Madeleine, who uses a wheelchair, has Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia 15, a recessive genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle stiffness and weakness.

Carina, who set up The Maddi Foundation in 2016 in her daughter’s honour, gave Capaldi a leaflet about a charity football match they were organising.

Capaldi – who is currently on his comeback UK tour – took the leaflet and donated “a few thousand” to support the match just 10 minutes later, prompting Madeleine and Carina to “cry on the spot”.

Madeleine called the Someone You Loved singer her “hero” and thanked him for “being so kind to me” and “making time for me”.

The photo of Madeleine and Carina with Capaldi was shared by the Miracle for Maddi Instagram account.

In the caption, Madeleine wrote: “One of the Best Days of My Life. Today was truly one of the best days of my life.

“I was at the O2 with my mum and sister when out of nowhere… LEWIS CAPALDI stopped to speak to me!

“He came over while I was in my wheelchair, smiled, and I asked for a photo with him. My mum told him she had been trying to contact him about our charity football match, but he explained he was working that weekend. My mum explained a little about my condition and why we’re fundraising.”

She went on: “He asked my name, introduced himself with a smile, ‘I’m Lewis, pleased to meet you’ and within 10 minutes, he had gone on Instagram and donated very generously to our cause.

“We all cried on the spot. It was one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever experienced. Lewis, you are not just my favourite artist, you are my HERO.

“Thank you for being so kind, for making time for me, and for giving me a memory I will never forget.

“Later, someone showed us a TikTok video that had been taken – capturing the exact moment my mum handed Lewis the leaflet. Seeing it back made us all tear up all over again.”

Carina also recounted the experience, telling the BBC: “It was just amazing.

“He spotted my daughter Maddi, she’s in a wheelchair, and came over to speak to her. He’s so nice and down to earth, and incredibly generous.

“It was such a lovely gesture from Lewis. He donated a few thousand. Maddi was overwhelmed – she just loves him anyway.”

Donations can be made to Madeleine’s GoFundMe page here.

This isn’t the first time Capaldi has shown his generous side with fans.

The Before You Go singer – who has been open about his battle with anxiety and Tourette syndrome – partnered with BetterHelp in July to offer 734,000 hours of free online therapy to fans.

He is currently touring the UK after returning to the spotlight with a surprise show at this summer’s Glastonbury following a two-year hiatus.

Last Friday, Capaldi has added a second BST Hyde Park show for next summer after overwhelming demand.

The BRIT Award winner will now perform on Sunday 12 July 2026, after his Saturday 11 July date sold out. Tickets for the newly announced London show are on sale now.
