Letters: A call for clarity: Tylenol and autism

As fertility doctors, we work every day to help our patients achieve healthy pregnancies. Recently, a federal announcement suggested that taking Tylenol (acetaminophen) during pregnancy causes autism. Understandably, this has raised concern and confusion among patients and families. Medical experts, including organizations representing obstetricians and maternal–fetal medicine specialists (high-risk pregnancy doctors), have been clear: There is no evidence at this point that acetaminophen causes autism. Autism is complex. Research shows it is strongly influenced by genetics and often runs in families, though we still don’t fully understand the exact mechanisms of inheritance. What we do know is that acetaminophen has been studied in pregnancy for decades and is considered one of the safest medications for treating fever and pain. Untreated fever can pose risks to a developing pregnancy, and untreated pain can compromise a mother’s health and, in turn, the baby’s health. That’s why we encourage pregnant women not to avoid safe, effective treatment out of fear — but instead to discuss any questions with their physician. Science continues to evolve, and we welcome more research into autism and child development. But for now, we urge our leaders and communities to rely on evidence-based guidance from physicians and researchers who dedicate their work to the health of mothers and babies.
