To the editor:
Iowa has a rich history of having one of the finest public education systems in the country. Not anymore. Since the Republicans have been in the majority in Iowa’s Legislature they have been focused on tax cuts skewed to the wealthy. They passed a flat 3.8% income tax rate and plan to “do something” about property taxes next session. In a couple of years they will have handed out over a billion dollars worth of vouchers for students to attend church schools. So much for the separation of church and state!
That’s why the recent Journal column by Republican Representative Collins has to be taken with a grain of salt.
He points to a provision in the College Affordability Act that forces tuition rates to be set earlier, before students start to enroll. For that to happen the Republicans in the legislature would have to do their job and pass the education set-aside on time — something they haven’t done in years.
Also, he boasts about the Regents agreeing to review all academic programs to ensure they align with Iowa’s workforce needs. Are you kidding? These students aren’t going to stay in Iowa until everything else gets fixed. Low wages, filthy water, regressive taxes, the highest cancer rate in the nation, anti-diversity, etc., etc.
They say a rising tide lifts all boats. Right now we have a very low tide.
