Letter: State DOE must act like a business to succeed

The biggest problem is that the state Department of Education is not run like a business. It is a politically driven entity. At the very least, both redistricting and the closure of some of the schools should be considered under the study.

A business is run by making correct financial decisions. A prime example is Foodland, the largest supermarket chain in Hawaii. Over the years it has chosen to close many of its stores, while rebranding and opening others. This is why it has survived all these years as a locally-owned, locally-run business. Foodland has been able to adapt to the current situation and grow its business.
