To the editor: In June, millions of us participated in the first No Kings day of protest organized by Indivisible and other pro-democracy groups.
It was one of the largest days of protest in U.S. history. Millions turned out in more than 2,000 towns and cities across the country. We showed President Donald Trump that his authoritarian power grab won’t go unanswered. And at a time when so many feel hopeless, we reminded them that there are millions of us banding together to save our democracy.
But Trump and his GOP loyalists didn’t get the message that we live in a constitutional democracy, not a monarchy. Trump has doubled down: turning the country into a police state, taking away health care and workers’ rights, causing economic chaos that’s raising the cost of living, defunding public education, attacking your freedom to vote, defying Congress and courts at every turn, engaging in levels of corruption inconceivable in any other administration and using the Department of Justice to go after his political opponents.
So we’re taking to the streets again on Oct. 18 for another nationwide No Kings day of protest. In Great Barrington, South County Resistance will be gathering in front of Town Hall from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. If you care about our democracy, the rule of law and civil rights, please show up so we can make this our beloved nation’s biggest protest yet. Find the Great Barrington event or another event near you at nokings.org.
Your presence will make a difference. It will send a signal to Trump, his MAGA cronies and all elected officials — including those who are with us — that our peaceful movement to oppose Trump’s authoritarian regime is only getting bigger and stronger.
In America, we don’t have kings, and we won’t back down against Trump’s lawlessness, chaos, corruption and cruelty. Don’t despair. Get energized and turn your anger into action.
