To the editor: It was nice seeing the profile of Eric Baumert and the Pittsfield Health Food Centre. (“Pittsfield Health Food Centre marks 60 years of service, community and care,” Eagle, Sept. 10.)
I married into a cat world, and shortly after moving to Great Barrington it was determined by my wife that our cats needed, or at least deserved, a higher quality food called “Spot’s Stew.” This was long before ubiquitous online shopping, and somehow my wife discovered that Spot’s Stew was available at the Pittsfield Health Food Centre. So for several years we made regular treks to Pittsfield to buy two or three cases at a time.
It was such a pleasure shopping at that store, and Eric was such a great guy. Those cats are long gone, and we’ve moved on to other culinary choices, but we have fond memories of that store.
It’s tough for brick and mortar stores these days. We do lose something when we no longer meet merchants face to face.
