The new prime minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, is the first female in such a position in that ancient society. She proclaims herself as far right and, for example, is against same-sex marriages. But the news that I could not wrap my mind around was the fact that her leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party is sinophobic (anti-China) and plans to effectively segregate the 1 million Chinese people living in Japan. Chinese might not be able to buy property, and her list of other “nots” is long. Also, she is planning new laws on espionage designed to target the Chinese. Incredible as it might seem, all of this sinophobia is virtually the identical script of the movie “Farewell to Manzanar,” in which the U.S. put Japanese Americans in concentration camps during WWII some 80 years ago.
