It’s time we start putting in more sidewalks islandwide, not just in the tourist spots. More sidewalks mean a healthier Guam and safer roads for our people and visitors alike. Right now, many areas got folks walking on the side of the road—parents pushing strollers, kids going to school, manåmko’ getting their exercise—all risking their safety because there’s no safe walkway. Solution: The Department of Public Works and the mayors’ offices can work together to identify areas most used by pedestrians and start small, one village at a time. Federal highway safety and health grants can help fund these projects instead of waiting on just local money. Contractors working on new road projects should also be required to include sidewalks as part of the plan. Let’s make Guam safer and healthier, one sidewalk at a time.
