Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest returns with star guests

The 16th edition of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest brings to Romanian audiences some of the most acclaimed titles from Cannes, Venice, and other major international film festivals. Up until November 2, screenings take place at Cinema Elvire Popesco, Cinema Muzeul Țăranului Român, and the Auditorium Hall of the National Museum of Art of Romania. Award-winning films from Cannes and Venice This year’s lineup includes by Jafar Panahi, winner of the Palme d’Or, and by Joachim Trier, awarded the Grand Prix. Other standout titles include by Mascha Schilinski, Sirat by Oliver Laxe, and The Secret Agent by Kleber Mendonça Filho.From Venice, audiences will see Jim Jarmusch’s Golden Lion winner, alongside Bugonia, No Other Choice by Park Chan-wook, and Gianfranco Rosi’s documentary Below the Clouds. Special guests and retrospectives Renowned French actress Emmanuelle Béart is the guest of honor, celebrated through a retrospective of La Belle Noiseuse, Un cœur en hiver, and L’étreinte. Béart will meet the public during Q&A sessions in Bucharest. Other international guests include Julia Ducournau, Palme d’Or winner for Titane, who presents her new film Alpha, and Sergei Loznitsa, who will discuss his latest Cannes title Two Prosecutors. Icelandic filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason will also meet audiences after the screening of The Love That Remains. Spotlight on Romanian cinema The Autumn Previews section showcases upcoming Romanian releases, including Dracula (Radu Jude), Sorella di Clausura (Ivana Mladenovic), Still Nia (Paula Oneț), Interior Zero (Eugen Jebeleanu), and Comatogen (Igor Cobileanski). This is the festival’s only competitive section, with the public choosing the winner. Diverse selection and special screenings Among this year’s recommendations are Eagles of the Republic by Tarik Saleh, Une vie privée by Rebecca Zlotowski, The Disappearance of Joseph Mengele by Kirill Serebrennikov, and La venue de l’avenir by Cédric Klapisch.Animation fans can look forward to Amélie et la Métaphysique des Tubes, a touching story by Mailys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han. The festival also features Lumière, l’aventure continue! by Thierry Frémaux, a documentary celebrating the origins of cinema through over 100 restored Lumière films. A celebration of global and local cinema Founded in 2010 by Cristian Mungiu with the support of Cannes Film Festival’s General Delegate Thierry Frémaux, Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest has become a vital event for film lovers. It continues to connect Romanian audiences with global cinema, bridging cultures through stories that define contemporary filmmaking.
