In 2013, Cayman Free Press changed ownership, with David and Vicki Legge taking over from owner and publisher Brian Uzzell. Uzzell had been at the helm of the publishing house for 40 years, an enterprise that had grown tremendously under his leadership to not only include a daily newspaper but a commercial print division, and a stable of magazines and websites. Negotiations had been ongoing for years, with David Legge recalling the final closing of the deal on 13 June 2013 in the Grand Pavilion offices of Colin Shaw’s law firm. “The mood was positive but painfully emotional. Brian had spent nearly 40 years of his life nurturing the newspaper and now passing it on to Vicki and me,” he wrote in a personal tribute to Uzzell after his passing in November 2018. “We vowed we would do our best to care for it with the same principle and integrity with which he had built it. Brian cried at that meeting. We all did.” The Legges, long-time residents and entrepreneurs, were the owners of Pinnacle Publishing and Marketing, which had published Grand Cayman Magazine and its predecessor Britannia Magazine since 1995. On acquiring Cayman Free Press, the company was renamed Pinnacle Media Ltd. The Caymanian Compass newspaper was renamed the Cayman Compass. The Legges continued Uzzell’s legacy, building on the company’s products and services while introducing several initiatives including a health magazine and company sponsored events. As editor-in-chief, David developed a strong editorial voice, highlighting issues he was passionate about, including education. Vicki oversaw the special publications department, which produced magazines and special newspaper sections. She was passionate about health and wellness, launching Cayman Health magazine in 2016. The two worked tirelessly as a team during their tenure, maintaining a high standard across all publications. The Legges were at the helm of the company until 2019, when it was sold to lawyer James Bergstrom. It was later acquired by Dart Media and Entertainment in 2023.
