Legendary '90s Alt-Rock Singer On Why Radiohead Stopped Touring

Radiohead is heading out on tour in Europe, with 20 scheduled shows starting on November 4. This will be the first time the iconic ’90s alt-rock band has performed live together since 2018. Ahead of the upcoming shows, the band did just one interview, with The Times UK, where they discussed the seven-year hiatus. “I guess the wheels came off a bit, so we had to stop. There were a lot of elements. The shows felt great, but it was, like, let’s halt now before we walk off this cliff,” lead singer Thom Yorke explained. 🎬SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 He continued, “And I needed to stop anyway, because I hadn’t really given myself time to grieve.” Yorke was referring to grieving the death of his former partner and the mother of his two children, Rachel Owen. They were together for 23 years before splitting in 2015. She died the following year, in 2016, from cancer. “Music can be a way to find meaning in things and the idea of having to stop it, even when it makes sense to, because you’re not well? Even at my lowest point? I can’t,” Yorke explained. “I need something that I can hold on to. But there have been points in my life where I have looked for solace in music and played the piano, but it literally hurts. Physically. The music hurts, because you’re going through trauma,” he added. This year, Radiohead is celebrating 40 years as a band, having formed in 1985. It wasn’t until 1991 that they were signed to EMI, and the following year they released their breakthrough single “Creep.”
