It seems to be a common theme that judges are becoming more political in a time of great division. The role of a judge should be that of impartiality by simply applying the facts of a case to the law. A Justice of the Maryland Supreme Court has brought serious attention to himself because of a Halloween display in his front yard that has numerous political themes. The liberal bias that is clearly on display may bring into question a judge’s ability to objectively rule from the bench. Justice Peter Killough, an appointee of Governor Wes Moore, has taken heat for a display that promotes leftist ideology. The theme included environmental activism, which could be a problem, considering the judge is presiding over an environmental case. Fox News Exclusive: EXCLUSIVE: A liberal Maryland Supreme Court justice is in the hot seat over a politically charged Halloween display on his lawn that an expert said casts doubt on his ability to rule impartially on a high-stakes case currently before the court. Maryland Supreme Court Justice Peter Killough, who was appointed to the court by Democratic Gov. Wes Moore, is taking criticism for exhibiting his left-wing political leanings through a Halloween display at his Maryland home. The display included an environmentalist sign, which the expert said is particularly concerning since Killough is currently involved in a high-stakes environmental case. “The signs, painted on Halloween-style gravestones, depict politically charged messages like, “Here lies the Constitution,” “RIP Freedom of Speech,” “RIP Food Aid,” “Beware Health Insurance Cuts,” “RIP Due Process” and “RIP Climate Science.” Fox News reported. According to one of the spokespersons for the judiciary, the signs in the yard belong to the judge’s wife. No additional comments were given to Fox News Digital beyond that explanation. Justice Andrew Gould, who once sat on the Arizona Supreme Court, offered some commentary regarding the Halloween signs that were on display. He explained that a judge should not be involved in a case after showing that kind of bias. He also explained that it can undermine the trust of the public if a judge shows partiality. It was serious enough where he said that if the judge had these leanings, it would be better to recuse oneself from the case. Judge Killough has been known to make poor decisions in the past. In 2022, at that time a circuit court judge, he had badly handled cases involving juvenile violence. He had been very lenient on many offenders, many who were let back on the street. He released a 12-year-old offender who confessed to killing a teen. Instead of locking him up, Killough put him on monitored probation. Justice Gould also explained that a lot of these judges are putting their biases on display because they feel they need to oppose President Trump. He said it has become more common in recent years.
