The Leaning Tower in Niles was illuminated purple throughout September in recognition of “National Recovery Month,” village officials announced on social media. According to the village of Niles Facebook page, the color symbolized the village’s support for individuals and families in recovery from substance abuse and mental health challenges, and Niles’ ongoing commitment to reducing stigma. “The village of Niles is proud to participate in a nationwide initiative aimed at raising awareness of the transformative power of recovery,” officials stated on the Facebook page. According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s website, National Recovery Month started in 1989 and is observed each September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery possible. The village’s commitment to supporting individuals and families affected by substance misuse extends beyond September through the Niles Engage program, the social media page states. “This year-round initiative provides outreach, education and awareness, focusing on prevention, early intervention and treatment navigation,” officials stated on Facebook. According to the village web page about the Engage program, since 1967, Niles Family Services has been the only one of its kind to offer comprehensive services all day every day – providing accessible, affordable and multilingual counseling to Niles residents. “Through support groups and community-based social activities, Niles Engage offers meaningful resources to promote recovery and overall well-being,” officials stated.
