The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) has released an update on plans to create a new travel hub in Cambridge. More than 500 people have responded to a consultation to replace the existing Newmarket Road Park & Ride. The existing site is leased and sits on land earmarked for future development. The new site is near the Newmarket Road and Airport Way junction, with easier access from the A14. The designs for the travel hub include: Double the current car parking spaces; 200 new cycle parking spaces and storage; Electric vehicle charging facilities; Signal-controlled access junctions on Newmarket Road and Airport Way; Extension of the Teversham shared-use path into the site. Jo Baker, senior project manager at the Greater Cambridge Partnership, said: “Thanks to everybody who has given us their insight into what the community needs. We’ve had a great response and the feedback will help us to create a travel hub that supports sustainable travel, eases congestion and improves connections into Cambridge.” The GCP will now review all submissions. The next step will be submitting a formal planning application in 2026. Subject to the approval of planning, the GCP will complete detailed designs and appoint a contractor to build the hub. Construction is expected to start in 2027. To get more breaking news and top stories delivered directly to your phone, join our new WhatsApp community.
