New York’s Attorney General has unveiled proposed regulations to curb addictive social media feeds for children, following the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act.
The new rules ban algorithm-personalised feeds for under-18s without parental consent and prohibit notifications to this age group between midnight and 6 a.m.
Social media platforms will be required to implement effective age verification methods, such as uploaded images or email/phone checks, to confirm users’ ages.
Under-18s who wish to receive algorithmic feeds or nighttime notifications will need to obtain parental consent.
The initiative aims to address a youth mental health crisis linked to social media’s addictive features, though similar age verification laws in other US states have faced legal challenges.
