Lasaco Assurance Launches ‘Safe Start Initiative’ to Support Maternal Health and Safer Motherhood in Nigeria

Lasaco Assurance Plc has launched a new corporate social responsibility programme designed to promote safer motherhood and improve infant health in underserved communities across Nigeria. The initiative, known as the “Safe Start Initiative,” was officially introduced on Tuesday at the Ogba Primary Health Care Centre in Ikeja, Lagos. According to a statement from the company, the Safe Start Initiative seeks to support expectant and new mothers through the provision of essential hygiene materials and education on financial planning for their children’s future. During the launch, Lasaco Assurance distributed maternity kits containing vital postnatal care items such as underlays, antiseptics, maternity pads, and baby nappies. The company noted that the initiative aims to ease the burden of childbirth and promote hygienic practices among new mothers. Speaking at the event, the Head of Underwriting at Lasaco Assurance Plc, Mrs. Mojibola Sonibare, explained that the initiative is not just about giving material items but about empowering women with the knowledge and resources needed to care for their children and plan for the future. “Every item in the maternity kit was thoughtfully selected to ease the journey of motherhood,” Sonibare said. “Through our session on insurance-backed education plans, we aim to help families understand that securing their children’s future begins with small, practical financial steps taken early in life.” She added that maternal and infant health remain central to national development and that Lasaco Assurance intends to play an active role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. “Healthy mothers and babies are the foundation of a healthy nation. The Safe Start Initiative is our way of contributing to safer births and stronger beginnings,” she said. As part of the event, the company held an interactive financial literacy session focused on how insurance-based education plans can help families build long-term financial security. Participants were encouraged to see insurance not just as a safety net but as a vital tool for securing their children’s educational and health needs. The Head of Strategy, Research and Communications at Lasaco Assurance, Mr. Adedayo Adetokun, said the initiative reflects the company’s broader philosophy of giving back to society through community-focused programmes. “The Safe Start Initiative represents Lasaco’s continuous commitment to meaningful social investments,” he said. “It shows our dedication to promoting community welfare beyond our core insurance business.” He emphasised that the programme aligns with Lasaco Assurance’s corporate values of care, service, and social responsibility. By supporting maternal health, the company seeks to improve the quality of life in local communities while deepening awareness about the role of insurance in family wellbeing. Also speaking at the event, the Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Oluseye Smart, said the programme demonstrates Lasaco Assurance’s compassion for families and its belief in nurturing healthier communities. “This is more than charity; it’s a way of showing love and care to the families we serve,” he stated. “Supporting new mothers and babies is one of the most impactful ways we can give back to society.” Health officials present at the event commended Lasaco Assurance for its intervention, describing it as timely, especially amid rising healthcare costs and inflation that have affected many families. Several mothers in attendance also expressed gratitude for the support, saying the maternity kits and health education sessions came at the right time. The company concluded the event with a short address by the Head of Internal Audit, Mr. Adesoji Onaadepo, who urged mothers to take proper care of their children and maintain hygiene to ensure healthy growth. He added that Lasaco Assurance would continue to promote initiatives that positively impact families and communities. Through the Safe Start Initiative, Lasaco Assurance Plc is reinforcing its commitment to corporate social responsibility by supporting safer births, reducing infant health risks, and promoting awareness on the importance of financial planning among Nigerian families. The initiative demonstrates that the company’s mission extends beyond providing insurance policies — it is also about building stronger, healthier, and more secure communities.
