Lakers Provide Injury Update on Luka Doncic Return Timeline

The Los Angeles Lakers have listed superstar Luka Doncic as questionable ahead of Friday’s NBA Cup opener against the Memphis Grizzlies. Doncic has been sidelined with a left finger sprain and lower left leg contusion. The 26-year-old played in the first two games of the season, beginning his first full campaign in the purple and gold on a high note. Doncic scored a collective 92 points with 23 rebounds and 17 assists against the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves. Now that he’s been upgraded to questionable, there’s a possibility the Lakers could get their franchise star back on the floor as soon as Friday. Doncic was originally expected to miss five or six games, so the latest status change for the guard is surprising. The 40-year-old missed the start of the season with sciatica on his right side and is not expected to make his season debut until mid-November. The LA squad has been tested early this season as injuries have plagued several players. Against the Portland Trail Blazers earlier this week, the Lakers had a total of seven players unavailable due to injury. Nevertheless, Austin Reaves has largely carried the team in Doncic’s absence as he put together a 51-point performance against the Sacramento Kings and hit the game-winning shot in Wednesday night’s win in Minnesota. Reaves is putting up All-Star numbers through five games as he hasn’t scored less than 25 points in a matchup thus far. While it is a small sample size, the guard’s hot start is an encouraging sign for the Lakers with Doncic set to return soon.
