Lakers Add Intriguing Forward Ahead of Training Camp

The Los Angeles Lakers have made another roster move before training camp, this time bringing in forward Anton Watson on a training camp contract. The former Gonzaga standout will compete for a spot when camp tips off this week, adding size, versatility, and defensive upside to Los Angeles’ frontcourt mix.
Lakers Add Watson to Roster Battle
Watson, 24, went undrafted in 2024 after a standout career at Gonzaga, where he averaged 10.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists during his junior year. At 6-foot-8, he built a reputation as a versatile defender who could switch across positions while also knocking down perimeter shots at a reliable clip.
The Lakers view his length and athleticism as tools that could translate well in a competitive camp environment. His ability to guard multiple positions and space the floor will be closely monitored as the team evaluates its depth heading into the new season.
Jarron Cumberland and Arthur Kaluma Moves
Watson is not the only fresh face in Los Angeles. The Lakers also signed former Portland Trail Blazers guard Jarron Cumberland, who last played in the NBA in 2021 and averaged 15.4 points in the G League last year.
To make room, the team waived forward Arthur Kaluma, who had joined the Lakers after going undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft. Kaluma played for the Lakers during Summer League and was signed to a one-year, non-guaranteed minimum contract. His exit clears space for the team to evaluate Watson and Cumberland in camp.
What Watson Brings the Lakers
Watson’s skill set matches exactly what the Lakers need from their depth pieces. Offensively, he can stretch the floor, finish in transition, and make smart reads as a passer. Defensively, his footwork and strength allow him to guard both smaller wings and bigger forwards — a valuable asset in a Western Conference stacked with size and scoring talent.
If Watson impresses in camp, he could carve out a role as a utility forward off the bench, giving the Lakers a versatile option behind stars like LeBron James and Luka Dončić.
Lakers Preseason on Deck
The Lakers open preseason on October 3 against the Phoenix Suns. Their regular season tips off October 21 at Crypto.com Arena against the Golden State Warriors.
By then, Watson will know if his training camp bet has paid off — and whether he has earned a spot on one of the NBA’s most star-studded rosters.
