Lake County gives $18,700 to United Way to bolster food pantries amid SNAP uncertainty

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The Lake County Board of Commissioners has approved an $18,700 agreement with the United Way of Lake County to provide emergency funding to local food pantries as officials prepare for a possible suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The money comes from the county’s Community Development Block Grant Program and more funding will be allocated as needed, Commissioner John Plecnik said. The partnership will help distribute aid to food pantries and community organizations countywide to support residents affected by the potential disruption. “Our Board acted swiftly to ensure no family in Lake County goes hungry during this period of uncertainty,” Board President Richard J. Regovich said. SNAP currently supports 17,141 Lake County residents, including 6,200 children and 2,510 seniors. Plecnik said the county’s action reflects its longstanding sense of community. “Lake County has always been a community that looks out for one another,” Plecnik said. “This partnership reflects our shared belief that every resident deserves access to nutritious food and the peace of mind that comes with a secure meal.” Residents in need of food assistance are encouraged to call 211 for information on nearby food pantries and meal programs. Donations can be dropped off at the United Way of Lake County, 9285 Progress Blvd. in Mentor, during business hours — Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. “This is a moment for all of us to come together and lend a hand,” Commissioner Morris W. Beverage III said. “Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, we can ensure that our neighbors and friends continue to have access to the food and support they need.” Those interested in contributing or volunteering can contact David Whittaker at United Way of Lake County by email at dwhittaker@uwlc.org or by phone at 440-639-1203.
