For travelers flying out of the Lafayette Airport, officials say you can expect longer delays as a result of the U.S. government’s first shutdown in seven years.
The shutdown comes after lawmakers were unable to agree on extending federal funding before the Oct. 1 deadline, leaving some federal services like the Transportation Security administration and air traffic control experiencing longer delays.
“While it is unfortunate some of our politicians have put politics before the well-being of our country, TSA is prepared for an orderly shutdown,” a TSA spokesperson said.
While TSA will continue operations to keep the traveling public safe, an extended shutdown could mean longer wait times at airports for travelers. As for employees, approximately 61,000 of the agency’s 64,000 employees are considered exempt but the remaining employees will be temporarily furloughed, according to the spokesperson.
“We kindly ask for our passengers’ patience during this time. Despite this challenge, we will remain vigilant and focused on performing our vital security mission on behalf of the American people.”
