Six MPs have put their names forward, including two members of the Government.

The frontrunner appears to be the Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson.

Some Labour MPs are worried that if she secures the backing of large numbers of her colleagues, some – or even all – of the other candidates will struggle to get enough backing to secure their place on the ballot of party members by Thursday’s deadline.
