Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia revealed the personal matter that caused him to step away from the team ahead of the World Series was the heartbreaking death of his newborn baby. “Sterling Sol Vesia🪽. Our little angel we love you forever & you’re with us always,” Alex and his wife, Kayla Vesia, wrote via Instagram on Friday, November 7. “Our beautiful daughter went to heaven Sunday October 26th. There are no words to describe the pain we’re going through but we hold her in our hearts and cherish every second we had with her.” In their personal post, the couple thanked the Dodgers for their “understanding and support during this time.” “Our baseball family showed up for us and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them,” the pair said. “Thank you Dodger Nation, Blue Jays organization and all baseball fans for your love and support. We have seen ALL your messages, comments and posts. It’s brought us so much comfort.” Their post concluded with a note of gratitude to health care workers who took care of baby Sterling and Kayla. “Lastly, we’d like to thank Cedars Sinai and all the medical staff who helped Kayla and Sterling,” the statement read. “Every person we came across was truly so incredible. With Love, The Vesias.” The Dodgers announced Alex’s hiatus via the team’s official Instagram account on October 23. Game 1 of the 2025 World Series was October 24. “It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife, Kayla, navigate a deeply personal family matter,” the post read. “The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family and we will provide an update at a later date.” Alex and Kayla, both 29, have been married since January 2024. The couple announced in April that they were expecting their first baby. “Baby Vesia coming soon,” they captioned a joint Instagram post at the time. “We are beyond excited for this next chapter!” In the accompanying photos, Alex and Kayla held up a custom newspaper that featured their pregnancy announcement and sonogram images. They sat on a blanket together outside with baby outfits hanging on a clothesline behind them. Kayla also showed off her growing bump in solo pictures from the maternity shoot. Later that month, Kayla shared a video of the moment she and Alex told their families about her pregnancy. As the group posed for photos on the field at Dodger Stadium, Alex surprised their relatives with sonogram pictures while announcing, “Kay’s pregnant!” Their family members excitedly cheered and hugged the parents-to-be in the sweet moment. In June, Kayla celebrated her baby shower, the theme of which was “a berry sweet baby girl.” “THANK YOU to everyone that made this shower as perfect as I could have ever dreamed!” she wrote via Instagram. “To my [sister-in-law] that took care of details big and small, my [mother-in-law] that hosted us in her beautiful home and to my mom and aunt who prepped all the food! Truly feel so incredibly blessed by people who came near or far! Meant the world and we love you all!” The following month, Kayla had another baby shower with her fellow pregnant Dodgers wives. “Dodger babies are def in bloom … thank you to the incredible @ladodgerwives for showering all of us!” she gushed via Instagram. “What a special night surrounded by such strong and incredible ladies. You guys mean the world to me!” In August, Kayla shared maternity photos from a beach shoot, writing, “Oh babygirl, how you’re the sun to me! Being your home has been my favorite chapter yet.” Alex commented on the Instagram post at the time, raving, “So beautiful!!!! You’re already the most amazing mommaaaa!!!!” Just days before the Dodgers announced Alex’s absence from the World Series, which began on Friday, October 24, Kayla celebrated her husband’s advancement to the championship.
