WASHINGTON – U.S. President Donald Trump’s lowered tariff of 15 percent on automobiles from Japan will take effect Tuesday, the Commerce Department said, about four months after his aggressive trade agenda started damaging the industrial backbone of one of Washington’s key allies.
The department announced the timing of the adjustment on Monday. The U.S. tariff rate for foreign-origin cars rose to 27.5 percent after Trump imposed in April an additional auto tariff on national security grounds, squeezing the margins of Japanese automakers and other manufacturers.
U.S., China strike deal on TikTok, Trump says he will speak with Xi Friday
MADRID – Senior U.S. and Chinese officials have agreed on a “framework” to enable the continued use of TikTok in the United States, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday, adding that the process to keep the popular app alive is expected to be finalized later this week by the presidents of the two countries.
Following high-level talks in Madrid, Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer declined to provide the specifics, including which company is set to buy the U.S. version of the short-form video-sharing app, owned by a Chinese company.
Japan, Brazil, 30 others aim to quadruple sustainable fuel use by 2035
TOKYO – Over 30 nations and entities agreed Monday at a forum in Osaka to boost the output and use of hydrogen, biofuel and other sustainable fuels by “at least four times” by 2035 from 2024 levels.

SEOUL – The militaries of South Korea, the United States and Japan began a trilateral exercise on Monday, South Korea’s Defense Ministry said, in a move to strengthen their readiness against the threat posed by North Korea.
The Freedom Edge exercise, running for five days through Friday, will take place in international waters east and south of South Korea’s southern island of Jeju, according to the South Korean military. It is aimed at enhancing joint capabilities to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats and safeguarding peace and stability in the region.
Man in 70s killed as motorbike rear-ended in pileup near Tokyo
SAITAMA, Japan – A man in his 70s was killed Monday evening when his motorbike was rear-ended in a pileup involving six cars in Kawagoe in Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo, police said.
A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of negligent driving after his car crashed into the stationary motorbike that was in a right-turn lane, triggering collisions among other vehicles, the police said, adding several people were apparently injured.
