Something’s clearly off with the San Francisco 49ers. Quarterback Brock Purdy remained limited in practice all week with a toe injury. And head coach Kyle Shanahan doesn’t seem too sure if his quarterback will be ready to go against the New York Giants on Sunday. Meanwhile, a bizarre new theory has surfaced about the team’s ongoing injury curse. Brock Purdy first injured his toe in Week 1, forcing him to miss two games. He returned against the Jaguars, but re-aggravated it and has now missed four straight. Kyle Shanahan, calling it a “sensitive situation,” says Purdy won’t play again until he feels fully confident in his recovery. “That he feels confident and ready to go based off how his toe feels…” the head coach said. “He has to let us know how good he feels. It’s hard to know what’s going on with the toe. The last time we felt like he was feeling pretty good, looked pretty good in practice, and then in the game a hit set him back 4 weeks. So it’s kind of a sensitive situation, and hopefully getting some reps in practice will give him that confidence that it’s better than it was last time,” he added. Meanwhile, Mac Jones has stepped in and done just enough to keep the Red and Gold steady, winning four of his six starts. The offense looks different with him, but at least it’s moving. And that’s exactly where a wild injury theory about the 49ers has started to surface. Mystery of Kyle Shanahan’s team practice field: Coincidence or cause? Analyst Chase Senior shared this strange theory on X that’s caught everyone’s attention. According to him, some players have joked about an electrical substation sitting right next to the 49ers’ practice field. Could that be the hidden reason behind the Niners’ never-ending injury woes? There have been a lot of studies how cell phones, blue tooth, wireless earbuds, etc emit a lot of EMF and that it can be harmful to people. Who knows. Working on a show on all of this now and wanted to pass this info along.” He isn’t saying it’s a fact, but he’s definitely stirring the conversation. Still, if you think the theory sounds wild, the concern is real. Since Kyle Shanahan took over in 2017, his players have missed 2,036 games. That’s the most in the NFL during that span. And by Football Outsiders’ adjusted-games-lost metric, San Francisco has led the league in injuries from 2013 through 2021. This season hasn’t been kinder either.
