Kwesi Pratt reacts to Mahama’s nomination of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has taken to social media to share his thoughts on the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice.

In a post on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Pratt described the development as interesting and highlighted several reasons why the nomination has attracted attention.

According to him, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is the most senior judge on the Supreme Court, ranking even ahead of the outgone Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkonoo.

He stated that former President John Agyekum Kufuor first appointed Baffoe-Bonnie to the Court of Appeal in 2006 before elevating him to the Supreme Court in 2008.

Pratt also emphasised the historical significance of the nomination, noting that this is the first time in 24 years that a President elected on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, has had the opportunity to nominate a Chief Justice.

#JUSTICEPresident John Dramani Mahama(@JDMahama) has nominated Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the Acting Chief Justice for consideration as the substantive Chief Justice of Ghana.
The nomination will have to be approved first by the Council of State and then by Parliament.
