Kwara State Launches Two Oxygen Plants to Boost Healthcare

The Kwara State Government on Monday commissioned two Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) oxygen plants at General Hospital, Lafiagi, and Thomas Adewumi Teaching Hospital, Omu-Aran, marking a significant step in enhancing healthcare delivery. The plants, donated by the Global Fund, were unveiled to ensure a steady supply of medical-grade oxygen across the state. Dr. Amina El-Imam, the Commissioner for Health, represented by Alhaji Toyin Raji, Assistant Director of Medical Laboratory Services, described the facilities as vital milestones in Kwara’s healthcare journey. “These plants will serve as regional hubs, providing affordable, locally produced oxygen to hospitals in Kwara North and Kwara South,” she said. “Medical oxygen is critical for neonatal care, surgeries, emergencies, and respiratory conditions, offering hope and better outcomes for patients.” The commissioner expressed gratitude to the Global Fund for their support, aligning the initiative with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s vision for accessible and sustainable healthcare. She also acknowledged the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Agency for Control of AIDS, and technical teams for their role in the successful installation and testing of the plants. Mr. Kingsley Onoja, Zonal Coordinator for North Central Oxygen at the Federal Ministry of Health, led the technical inspection, confirming that components like the Air Compressor, PSA Oxygen Generator, Booster Compressor, and Filling Ramp were rigorously tested for oxygen purity and efficiency. He urged the state to form an Oxygen Committee and develop a sustainable framework to ensure the plants’ operation beyond their five-year warranty, suggesting revenue generation through oxygen sales to fund maintenance. Dr. Saliu Bolakale, Chief Medical Director of Lafiagi General Hospital, hailed the Global Fund and the state government for their investment in healthcare. “These oxygen plants will transform service delivery and save lives by ensuring a reliable oxygen supply,” he said, emphasizing the project’s role in advancing Kwara’s healthcare infrastructure and reflecting the government’s commitment to public well-being.
