New Delhi: In Nepal the trigger point of the violent Gen-Z protests is said to be the Government of Nepal’s order to ban 26 popular social media platforms including Facebook X WhatsApp Reddit LinkedIn and YouTube. This order was passed on Thursday September 4. The Nepal government said that these social media platforms were operating without registration; hence they are being banned. The decision was in line with the country’s Supreme Court directive and a high-level ministerial meeting held on Thursday September 6.
Social Media platforms blocked on September 4
Prithvi Subba Gurung Nepal’s Minister for Communication and Information said about two dozen social network platforms that are widely used in Nepal were repeatedly given notices to come forward and register their companies officially in the country adding that the platforms would be blocked immediately. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority was instructed to disable unregistered social sites.
26 popular social media platforms including Facebook X WhatsApp Reddit LinkedIn and YouTube were blocked with immediate effect.
The Nepal government brought a bill in parliament
The Nepal government has been asking the companies to appoint a liaison office or point in the country for which it has brought a bill in parliament that aims to ensure that social platforms are properly managed responsible and accountable.
The bill was not fully debated in parliament till September 4 as it was widely criticised as a tool for censorship and punishing opponents who voice their protests online. Rights groups called it an attempt by the government to curb freedom of expression and violate citizens’ fundamental rights.
Events of September 8
On 8 September 2025 large gatherings took place in Kathmandu with tens of thousands of participants called Gen-Z. The protest had no formal leadership with individuals joining voluntarily to oppose corruption and the ban on social media. The demonstrations escalated when protesters attempted to enter the Federal Parliament of Nepal leading security forces to respond with tear gas water cannons rubber bullets and live ammunition.
In the evening the government lifted the ban on social media platforms and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned after which a curfew was imposed in several major cities including Kathmandu Birgunj Bhairahawa Butwal Pokhara Itahari and Damak.
Reportedly the confrontations resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people and injuries to 347 people.
Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday September 9 2025
Meanwhile faced with intense pressure from Gen-Z protests Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned from his post on Tuesday September 9 2025. Oli submitted his resignation letter to President Ram Chandra Poudel citing the abnormal situation in the country as protests intensified against his rule throughout the country.
Reports suggest that before resigning Oli had issued a directive to his Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) ministers not to resign from their posts and fled to an army barracks in Shivapuri at Budhanilkantha.
Reportedly Oli’s house was set on fire. Here is the video.
