The Kozhikode Corporation Council has demanded the Election Commission of India to withhold the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters’ list in Kerala ahead of the local body polls. The council meeting chaired by Deputy Mayor C.P. Musafar Ahamed on Friday (October 31, 2025) discussed the adjournment motion presented by Opposition leader K.C. Shobhita. The motion was unanimously supported by the UDF and LDF councillors, while the six BJP councillors opposed it. Ms. Shobhita argued that the SIR was being implemented in such a way that the voter needed to prove that he deserved to be on the electoral rolls. On the other hand, BJP councillor C.S. Sathyabhama said that Bangaladeshis and Rohingya refugees were included in the voters’ list in many places, and that it was necessary to weed them out and ensure that only Indians were part of the list. Earlier, the Deputy Mayor denied permission to another adjournment motion proposed by BJP councillor Navya Haridas. Solid waste management at various levels were discussed over the submissions at the meeting. Congress councillor S.K. Aboobakker pointed out that the twin bins kept at different parts of the city were overflowing with household garbage and suggested that they be removed. Health standing committee chairperson S. Jayasree pointed out that the attitude of the public needed to be changed in the matter of the bins. The waste management fiasco on the opening day of the food street on Kozhikode beach was brought up by BJP councillor Saritha Parayeri. The Health Officer explained that it happened as the large crowd on the inaugural day had not cared to use the bins kept at the venue and scattered the garbage all over the beach. He said that a Food Street Management Committee has been formed and that cleaning workers have been deployed in three shifts round the clock for waste management at the food street. Besides, the Corporation was planning to rope in an agency to handle the matter more effectively, he added. IUML councillor K. Moideen Koya asked about the status of the dredging works on river Kallai. The council passed over 170 items in the agenda in one of its last meetings before the local body polls.
