Korean giant Samsung launches stunning new salvo in battle with Apple

Korean giant Samsung launches stunning new salvo in battle with Apple READ MORE: Samsung unveils thinnest model EVER with Galaxy By BEN SHIMKUS, US CONSUMER REPORTER Published: 21:13 GMT, 7 November 2025 | Updated: 01:21 GMT, 8 November 2025 Samsung is stepping up its battle with America's biggest phone company. But this time, the fight is over credit cards. The tech giant is in advanced talks with Barclays to launch a consumer credit card in the US, according to people familiar with the discussions, The Wall Street Journal reported. The partnership would mark Samsung's latest attempt to compete directly with Apple's growing ecosystem of money products. Currently, Apple offers popular credit card and digital wallet options, whereas Samsung's US financial options lag in popularity. Samsung's tap-to-pay feature is popular in South Korea. For Barclays, the deal would expand its US credit card business after losing some of its partnership with American Airlines. The British bank, which already issues co-branded cards for companies such as JetBlue and Wyndham, has been seeking new opportunities outside the travel sector. Samsung and Barclays want to formally announce the tie-up by the end of the year. Visa is also in talks to be the credit card's network. Can Samsung gain the upper hand over Apple? The company is also exploring the introduction of a high-yield savings account, a digital prepaid account, and a buy-now, pay-later service, according to internal materials reviewed by WSJ. And, the moves come as credit cards compete to attract America's wealthiest spenders. In September, Amex boosted its Platinum card with credits worth $400 at restaurants, $600 at hotels, $300 at Lululemon, 5x points on flights, and lounge access. The annual fee jumped from $695 to $895. But the hefty pricetag has some big perks for big spenders: Amex is ramping up its presence in Las Vegas ahead of the Formula One Grand Prix, rolling out new trackside lounges, member-only pop-ups, and high-end hotel benefits. To sweeten the deal, new customers are also being offered as many as 175,000 points — convertible into air miles — if they sign up and spend $8,000 in the first six months. Chase has also refreshed its Sapphire Reserve, adding new travel benefits, 3x points on dining and travel, and raising its annual fee to $795. Citi also tried to jump into the luxury race with its Strata Elite card, but the release has been more of a thud: Some customers say they've been unable to make purchases or redeem rewards for more than a month. The bank's top-end card comes with a $595 annual fee. This is a breaking news story. Updates to come.
