Kolkata: Tension prevailed in south Kolkata’s busy Charu Market area on Sunday after armed men opened fire inside a gym on Deshapran Sashmal Road, creating panic among locals and gym-goers. According to police, two men wearing raincoats and helmets arrived on a motorbike in the afternoon and stormed into the gym. They were reportedly looking for its owner, Joy Kamdar. When they failed to locate him, the assailants fired two rounds in the air before quickly leaving the premises. The gym was crowded at the time, and the sudden gunfire sent members scrambling for cover. Fortunately, no one was injured. Police officers rushed to the spot and launched an investigation, registering the statements of Kamdar and several eyewitnesses. Preliminary inquiries suggest the incident may be linked to either a business rivalry or an extortion bid, though officials have not ruled out other possibilities. “Efforts are being made to nab the armed men who are yet to be identified,” a senior officer said, adding that multiple teams are scanning CCTV footage from the area. In other news, Kolkata Police has arrested Debanshu Biswas, the prime accused in the alleged gangrape of a young woman from Deshapriya Park, officials said on Friday. He was nabbed near the area on Thursday night and will be produced in court. Earlier, co-accused Chandan Malik was arrested at Bardhaman railway station. Police said the survivor had befriended Malik, who posed as a Durga Puja organiser, and was later introduced to Biswas. On her birthday, 5 September, the duo allegedly lured her to a Regent Park flat where the assault occurred. Investigators are probing whether more individuals were involved in the crime.
