Knightfall Is Finally Adapting A Story DC Needed To Decades Ago

After an over 30-year-long wait, one of Batman's biggest comic stories is being adapted to film format - and it's one that well and truly deserves a full transformation into the world of movies. Batman's reputation speaks for itself, with the DC titan remaining one of the franchise's most popular heroes in the comics and on the big and small screens. That said, while Batman's comic stories play a naturally colossal role in his various on-screen appearances, there are still plenty of character-defining comics that have yet to ever be fully adapted on the big screen, despite their popularity. Excitingly, one of the biggest and best Batman comic stories is now set to get this film treatment after decades of waiting. One Of Batman's Biggest Comic Stories Is Finally Getting A Full Adaptation Having first released between 1994-1995, Knightfall remains even decades later one of the most seminal Batman comics ever, other than juggernauts like The Killing Joke. Featuring Batman and Bane going toe to toe - and the infamous instance of Bane breaking Batman's back - Knightfall works on just about every level a comic conceivably can, earning its reputation and then some. In the years since, Knightfall has remained a cornerstone of Batman's comic history, and adaptations have clearly taken inspiration from the tone and events of the comic, though without ever fully adapting the story altogether. However, as of 2025, that is about to change. October 2025 brought the announcement that a Batman: Knightfall series will be coming to fruition under Warner Bros. Animation, with the story split up into installments, and the first part of the upcoming DC movie series set to release in 2026, bringing the iconic Batman story to life in a whole new way. Why It's Taken So Long For Knightfall To Get A Full Movie Adaptation While Batman movies adapting comic stories wholesale isn't unheard of, it's a treatment that is generally ascribed to releases that are a little bigger again than Knightfall in pop culture - with the likes of the previously mentioned The Killing Joke and Batman: The Long Halloween being two prime examples. Of course, there's also the fact that Knightfall was adapted loosely as part of one of the biggest Batman movies of all time: The Dark Knight Rises. While The Dark Knight Rises clearly adapts Knightfall, it also utilizes elements of several other key comic stories like No Man's Land, meaning it's a blend of different narratives.
