Knife-wielding Seke man tries to kill cop

A Seke man has been jailed after he tried to kill a policeman, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) is reporting.

The Harare Magistrates’ Court has convicted Gilbert Dongodza (50) from Seke for attempted murder.

The court heard that on the 23rd of December, 2023, at Arcadia, Harare, the victim, a 36-year-old police officer, spotted the offender brandishing a knife and confronted him. Dongodza threatened to stab the victim and chased him, wielding the okapi knife.

The cop then teamed up with other police officers and followed the offender to St Martin’s Bus Stop along Seke Road.

When Dongodza saw the police officer and his colleagues, he charged towards them, holding a knife and throwing stones at the other police officers. Warning shots were fired, but this did not deter the offender.

He continued to charge towards the victim and tried to stab him on the hand, missed, knocked him to the ground, and stabbed him below the right eye.

Dongodza was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, of which one year was suspended for five years. He will serve an effective four years.
