In honour of National Philanthropy Day 2025, Kingston resident Bernie Robinson will be recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Southeastern Ontario (AFPSO). National Philanthropy Day is observed annually on November 15 and, each year, the AFPSO recognizes “a group of inspirational people and organizations that have positively impacted our community in immeasurable ways,” according to the organization. Robinson, perhaps most recognizable to Kingstonians as the head of the Robinson Group of Companies and for his many contributions to the Kingston community, such as the Robinson Community Garden, is being awarded the most prestigious of AFPSO honours this year: Outstanding Philanthropist. Nominated for the award by St. Lawrence College, Robinson will receive his award at a ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025, at Albert College in Belleville, where he will be “recognized” for his “outstanding contributions.” “Congratulations to our distinguished honourees,” the AFPSO said in a press release on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025, noting that National Philanthropy Day “honours the spirit of giving and all it makes possible” and is “a time to recognize philanthropists and volunteers whose generosity drives the vital work of our non-profits and charities every day.” The AFPSO described Robinson as “a humble man” who “grew an international business from literally a ‘mom and pop’ business run out of their home.” “He doesn’t take his success lightly but rather is always thinking about how his prosperity can help others. He cares deeply about the Kingston community he calls home and is deeply saddened by his fellow Kingstonians who are struggling, particularly with health issues and lack of food,” the organization said of Robinson, noting that the Kingston business magnate feels it is his duty to give back and do whatever he can to help those in need, from students in need of help with tuition, children who are hungry, or those fighting disease. “Through his financial and gift-in-kind donations, along with rallying his networks to also participate in these causes, Bernie is well known in the Kingston area for being someone you can count on to step up and take action against issues we face every day.” The AFPSO honourees will be celebrated ahead of National Philanthropy Day at the November 13 award ceremony, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Albert College. “As we celebrate National Philanthropy Day, we are reminded of the profound impact that giving has on our communities,” said Melanie Barrett, President of AFPSO. “Each of our honourees gives of their time, treasure and heart in their own unique way — yet all share a common purpose: to make a difference. The foundations and charities they support could not do what they do without the generosity of donors and the dedication of volunteers who stand beside them, day in and day out. Together, this year’s honourees embody the spirit of giving and are truly making a difference.”
