Kaieteur Sports – West Indies pair Brandon King and Gudakesh Motie were the only Caribbean players snapped up at the 2025/26 SA20 auction, held in Cape Town on Tuesday.

The SA20, officially known as the Betway SA20 for sponsorship purposes, is a franchise-based Twenty20 cricket tournament in South Africa. Organized by Cricket South Africa, the competition was first staged in 2023 and features six city-based teams battling for supremacy.

Despite 28 West Indians throwing their hats into the ring, only the explosive opening batsman and the crafty left-arm spinner heard their names called when the hammer went down.

Motie, who continues to enhance his reputation as one of the region’s premier spinners, was picked up by the Paarl Royals for R375,000 (US$21,437.41).

King, known for his ability to clear the ropes with ease, was secured by the Joburg Super Kings for R200,000 (US$11,435.62).

The duo will join fellow West Indians already confirmed for Season 4 of the high-profile T20 league, which bowls off on December 26. Nicholas Pooran was a pre-signing for MI Cape Town, while the Super Kings and Pretoria Capitals locked in Akeal Hosein and Sherfane Rutherford respectively.

Veteran campaigner Sunil Narine was retained by Durban’s Super Giants through pre-signing, while Andre Russell will feature for the Capitals after being snapped up as a wild card.

The Caribbean stars were among the 541 names in the player pool for the auction, but only a handful picked up contracts as franchises finalised their squads ahead of the tournament’s December start.
