Khalistani terrorist Pannun’s case takes new turn as US files new charges against Nikhil Gupta, Nepal and Pakistan angles surface

New Delhi: The US government has filed new charges against jailed Indian citizen Nikhil Gupta. These charges include money laundering credit card fraud drug and arms trafficking and attempted murder of a person in Nepal or Pakistan. In fresh court documents US government lawyers have claimed that the alleged murder-for-hire plot was not limited to New York but also included plans to murder another person in Nepal or Pakistan. Who is Nikhil Gupta? This case involves Indian citizen Nikhil Gupta whom the US Department of Justice accused last year of attempting to murder American citizen Gurpatwant Singh Pannu in New York. Prosecutors say Gupta received these orders from Vikash Yadav an officer of Indias external intelligence agency. Gupta was arrested in the Czech Republic in June 2023 and extradited to the USA while Vikash Yadav remains in India. New allegations in court In documents filed this week in federal court in New York prosecutors stated that Nikhil Gupta and Vikash Yadav had planned to assassinate another individual in Nepal or Pakistan. Furthermore the court also claimed that the two were linked to the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was killed in Canada in 2023. Nijjar and Gurpatwant Singh Pannu the Khalistani terrorist targeted in New York are considered close associates. Both have been designated terrorists by the Indian government. Indias stance and relations with USA India initially rejected Canadas allegations but launched an internal investigation following a US complaint. According to a Bloomberg report Indias investigation found that the plot was hatched by a group of rogue agents. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated last October that the individual involved in the case had been removed from service. However the Indian Foreign Ministry has not commented on the latest allegations. Relations between the US and India have also soured in recent months as the Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on India much higher than on other countries in the region. Next trial date Nikhil Gupta has pleaded not guilty to all charges in a US court. His trial will begin in New York on November 3 2025. Prosecutors say they have examined hundreds of WhatsApp chats and emails between Gupta and Yadav. Documents presented in the court also recorded that Gupta and Yadav had discussed targeting Nijjar planning another murder in Nepal or Pakistan and providing weapons.
