Kelly Bishop Reveals Key To Successful Gilmore Girls Spinoff

We would all love another Gilmore Girls revival or a spinoff, and Kelly Bishop figured out exactly what the show would need to continue. The wonderful world of Stars Hollow is still a quirky and enjoyable place to revisit, whether we’re discussing favorite characters or still unhappy about the final episode of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life called “Fall.”
Every time a Gilmore Girls cast member is asked about returning to this beloved small town, fans are all ears. Considering how many people are ready and waiting to see Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) Gilmore again, Kelly Bishop’s comments are thrilling and make us even more impatient about the possibility of more episodes.
Kelly Bishop Revealed The One Thing Needed For A Gilmore Girls Spinoff To Succeed
In a clip from the upcoming documentary Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, Kelly Bishop said a Gilmore Girls spinoff should have Amy Sherman-Palladino. She explained, “I don’t think anyone else can do it.”
Amy Sherman-Palladino’s voice is why Gilmore Girls was such a success.
This is exactly right, as Amy Sherman-Palladino’s voice is why Gilmore Girls was such a success. It’s hard to think of another show where the characters talk so quickly, but with optimism and enthusiasm, and not anger or negativity, which sums up the singular tone of Gilmore Girls.
Sure, sometimes Rory and Lorelai go on rants about life or pop culture. They’re only human, and that makes them relatable. But Gilmore Girls is ultimately cheerful, and that’s why it remains a reassuring binge-watch.
Gilmore Girls Season 7 Proved Why The Show Can’t Expand Without Amy Sherman-Palladino
Gilmore Girls season 7 is the weakest in terms of storytelling and character growth, and that’s because Amy Sherman-Palladino left after season 6. As her husband/partner Daniel Palladino told Entertainment Weekly, they hoped for a contract spanning two years, but it didn’t work out.
Even Kelly Bishop agrees about the final Gilmore Girls season. In the same clip from the documentary, Bishop shares that she didn’t think season 7’s episodes lived up to the high quality of previous seasons, and said of the showrunner/creator, “They couldn’t recreate her.”
Reflecting on Gilmore Girls season 7, it’s hard not to wince at Lorelai and Christopher Hayden’s (David Sutcliffe) marriage, which seems to happen out of nowhere and inspired a lot of outcry.
Other storylines, like Rory being attracted to a teaching assistant, aren’t as fun or moving as Rory’s two different birthday parties in Gilmore Girls season 1 or Rory and Paris Geller (Liza Weil) becoming friends at Yale. There was no magic, emotion, or excitement.
A Gilmore Girls Spinoff Or Sequel Would Need More Than The Show’s Creator To Succeed
Despite the anticipation for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, the revival’s storylines ultimately failed to impress or entertain the way the original show did. Since fans don’t love the revival anywhere near as much as the OG series, a Gilmore Girls spinoff or sequel series has to have a logical and compelling story.
Having Amy Sherman-Palladino attached to a second revival or a spinoff wouldn’t be enough, as not all of her other series match the quality of Gilmore Girls. While The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a beautiful story about a housewife-turned-comedian with quick dialogue as clever as Rory and Lorelai’s banter, Étoile was canceled after one season.
Another Gilmore Girls revival would have to explain the father of Rory’s baby, and depending on the answer, fans might be more upset than if it had remained a mystery forever. Then, if the episodes focused on her raising her child, it would be disappointing if the show didn’t allow her to continue to pursue her journalism career.
A Gilmore Girls spinoff is a cool idea, but it would need to be set in Stars Hollow, or else risk losing one of the main reasons why the show is so popular. But several characters would have to be involved, too. Is it even Gilmore Girls without Luke’s diner or Kirk Gleason’s (Sean Gunn) many business ideas?
In the Drink Coffee, Talk Fast clip, some cast members and experts shared spinoff ideas, from Rose Abdoo and Sally Struthers suggesting a Christmas film to Buffy the Gilmore Slayer podcast host Stacey Kulow mentioning a Richard and Emily prequel. Both sound intriguing, although the last one would be tricky since a Stars Hollow setting wouldn’t make sense.
Maybe a Gilmore Girls sequel could show Rory as a parent who still has career dreams, or be a prequel about Lorelai raising Rory before the events of season 1. That way, the sweet small town could still be the main location, and there’s the potential for some cameos from the singular characters we know and love.’
