Chilean right-wing presidential candidate and front-runner José Antonio Kast on Monday rolled out plans to crack down on clandestine immigration, tapping into voter angst over an influx of foreigners.
In a set of proposals dubbed “Chileans First,” Kast vowed to criminalize undocumented migration, designate a special jail for people convicted of that offense and tighten oversight of remittances sent abroad. Over the past three years, more than 125,000 people have entered the country of roughly 19 million clandestinely and no one who has done so would be allowed to legalize their situation, Kast told reporters.
