The Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, has ordered a probe into an illegal water business operated by a private individual in Opeikuma, Kasoa.
Although residents of Opeikuma and other communities, such as Kae Me Bre, Ash Town, Krispo City, UN City, and others have not received water from their taps for several months, water tankers have frequented the private facility to draw water, raising suspicions.
Following complaints, the MCE made an unannounced visit to the facility, revealing discrete details.
The MCE’s visit uncovered that the individual had tapped into a Ghana Water distribution line and was storing large volumes of water in an underground tank.
It also revealed that the individual had no metering system at the facility and had also erected a three-bedroom house on the tank to obscure the trade.
Requesting to remain anonymous, the operator confirmed to Citi News that some officials of the Ghana Water Limited were aware of his operations.
When asked whether he pays bills, he responded, “I pay an estimated bill between GHS 2,500 and GHS 3,000,” but could not show any proof to authenticate his claim, though he sells to tankers between GHS 450 and GHS 600, further revealing a collusion with officials and massive revenue losses to the state.
The MCE, who expressed shock at the details, told Citi News that “I have ordered the immediate closure of this facility and have also asked the district manager of the Ghana Water Limited to investigate and submit a report on this. We cannot allow this business to operate while several residents are without water in their homes. Water is a resource that must be distributed equitably”.
Equally concerned, the Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Okyere Ekow Panyin, has cautioned others who may be engaging in similar activities to desist, stressing that “we are battling a water crisis and can’t allow a few to exploit water resources at the expense of others. Any person caught in such an act will be severely dealt with.”
