Kanye West apologizes for antisemitic remarks, cites bipolar disorder

Kanye West, who now goes by Ye, appeared in a video offering remorse for past hateful statements directed at the Jewish community, citing his struggles with bipolar disorder as a contributing factor, Billboard reported. In footage shared to the Instagram account of Rabbi Yoshiayao Yosef Pinto, Ye expressed regret for remarks that damaged his public standing and business relationships, including a 2022 interview in which he praised Adolf Hitler. “I feel really blessed to be able to sit here with you today and just take accountability,” Ye said in the video, which concluded with him embracing the rabbi. The rapper attributed his past behavior to mental health challenges, explaining that his condition caused him to take his ideas to extremes. “I was dealing with some various issues, dealing with bipolar also,” Ye said. “So, it would take the ideas I had and have me take them to the extreme where I would forget about the protection of the people around me and/or myself.” Ye’s bipolar disorder was recently explored in the recently released documentary “In Whose Name” that received positive reviews, the Billboard report said. “It’s a big deal for me as a man to come and take accountability for all the things that I’ve said, and I really just appreciate you embracing me with open arms and allowing me to make amends,” he said. “This is the beginning and the first steps and the first brick-by-brick to build back the strong walls.” “A person is not defined by his mistakes, but by the way he chooses to correct them,” Rabbi Pinto, who serves as the leader of the Shuva Israel institutions, said in a translated statement. “This is the true strength of man: The ability to return, to learn and to build bridges of love and peace.” Ye is expected to release his first solo album since 2021’s “Donda” before the end of the year, according to Billboard.
