Kansas City Chiefs Eye Possible Move With 65,000-Seat Dome

The Kansas City Chiefs may be looking toward a big change — and possibly a new home. According to a new report, the reigning Super Bowl champions have requested design proposals for a potential 65,000-seat domed stadium on the Kansas side of the metro area. While the team hasn’t made any formal announcements or commitments, the move signals that leadership is exploring long-term options beyond Arrowhead Stadium, which has been the Chiefs’ home since 1972. Radio host Pete Mundo of KCMO first broke the news, revealing that the organization issued a request for proposals (RFP) to multiple architectural firms to imagine what a state-of-the-art, retractable-roof facility could look like in Kansas City, Kansas. Kansas City Chiefs Exploring New Stadium Proposals Mundo reported that the team’s RFP calls for plans to build a domed stadium near Interstates 435 and 70, close to The Legends shopping and entertainment complex. “It would be a dome stadium, 65,000 seats, a retractable grass field like what they do in Vegas,” Mundo told his listeners on Friday. He clarified that the request doesn’t necessarily mean the Chiefs are moving — at least not yet. “This does not mean they’re going to Kansas,” he said. “It just means that there is an RFP out on the streets. It has been thrown out there to multiple architecture firms who are being asked to bid and share their proposals.” Mundo added that the team plans to narrow down the field of roughly ten firms to two finalists by early next year for what he called a “design competition.” He later posted on X that the selection process is ongoing, but emphasized that the Chiefs remain undecided. “If I was a betting man,” Mundo said, “my gut still tells me that they stay where they’re at — at Arrowhead Stadium. But there are conversations, RFPs being put out there, and NDAs all over this thing.” Chiefs and Royals Both Evaluating Future Stadium Options The news comes as both the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals continue to evaluate their shared home at the Truman Sports Complex. The two teams have played side by side for over five decades, but the Royals are expected to move first, with their ownership exploring potential sites in downtown Kansas City, North Kansas City, and near 119th and Nall Avenue in Kansas. While the Chiefs have consistently emphasized their connection to Arrowhead, league trends are shifting toward modern, domed stadiums that can host events beyond football — including concerts, NCAA tournaments, and even Super Bowls. “There is at least movement on the Kansas side of the state line as they consider some type of a dome stadium out there by The Legends,” Mundo said. For now, the report remains speculative, but it has certainly reignited a major conversation in Chiefs Kingdom about the team’s long-term future — and where the next era of Kansas City football might take place. As stadium talk swirls, the Chiefs are using their bye week to regroup. After a rocky start that included early losses, they entered Week 10 with a 5-4 record — not exactly the dominant form fans expected.
